As biology and science tell us, 60% of the human adult body is water, but how much water should you drink during exercise? Should you drink before, during or after? Let’s look at some facts to help you understand how to keep your body in perfect hydration.
You Daily Intake
There is no rule of thumb when it comes to how much fluids and/or water you should take on a daily basis. You should take into consideration, your weight, your height, and your age. However, four to six cups of fluid daily is generally recommended for most people to consume.
Water & Exercise
For those who exercise on a regular basis, the daily intake of water will increase significantly. The American Council on exercise recommends drinking seventeen to twenty (17-20 oz) ounces of fluid. They also recommend:
- Two to three ounces (2-3 oz) before working out.
- Another eight ounces (8 oz) 20 to 30 minutes before starting your work out.
- Seven to ten ounces (7-10 oz), every ten to twenty minutes while exercising.
- Eight ounces (8 oz) post workout.
Symptoms Of Dehydration
If you do not find the right balance of fluid intake while exercising, you may experience dehydration. Some of the symptoms could be:
- Feeling thirsty
- Dark yellow and strong-smelling pee
- Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
- Feeling tired
- A dry mouth, lips and eyes
- Peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day
Gatorade Or Water
While Gatorade can help you stay hydrated, it’s best to only drink it when needed. For people who aren’t exercising for at least one hour, five days per week, water is the best bet for staying hydrated. Electrolytes coming from natural sources without added sugars and dyes are recommended.
